#TOMB RAIDER LARA CROFT OUTFITS SERIES#
Lead artist Toby Gard was influenced, he later revealed, by the Indiana Jones franchise, the films of John Woo, Swedish pop singer Neneh Cherry, and dystopian comic book series Tank Girl. The concept for Tomb Raider originated in 1994 at the now defunct Derby-based game studio Core. She has become a household name, even in households that don’t contain a games console. The character has been used to advertise Lucozade, VISA and Spanish car manufacturer SEAT. Over the years, the character, and the actresses portraying her, have featured on over 1,400 magazine covers, including many outside of the gaming sphere such as TIME, Vogue, Elle, EMPIRE, Loaded, The Face and FHM. As well as games, Tomb Raider comprises comics, novels, toys and films. During this time, Croft was established as a Sony mascot and was key to the company’s future success.Ĭroft today is the cross-media queen of the action genre. Sony signed an exclusive deal with original Tomb Raider developer Core Design and publisher Eidos Interactive in 1997, ahead of the release of Tomb Raider II, which kept all games in the series on the PlayStation until the turn of the millennium. Where Princess Peach might call a plumber for help, Croft is more than capable of disposing of wolves, dinosaurs and monsters herself.Īlthough the first Tomb Raider game was released on the Sega Saturn on October 25 1996, perhaps the more pertinent anniversary to note is its launch on the Sony PlayStation a few weeks later on November 14. For 25 years the archeologist-cum-adventurer has put paid to the concept of a damsel in distress across 20 titles in the Tomb Raider series. The longevity of Lara Croft is matched by few other characters in video games.
